Animal Magnetism, Why People Are So in Love with Their Pets
Teena Stewart
I'm the second oldest in a family of five kids. While growing up I remember having, not necessarily all at once, a bird, rabbits, gerbils, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, dogs and even a pet pony our doctor gave us when his son was moving away to college.
In my adult life I've owned two Scotties, two rescued cats, and currently, two rescued hounds. Now that the kids are grown and live far away, my furry companions have become my husband Jeff's and my substitute children. At night my routine, after usually watching a TV show with Jeff, consists of heading upstairs to our bedroom. I sink down into my velvety blue reading chair and read for a while, but I can't resist eventually moving onto the bed to join my two dogs, Aggie and Scout. I sprawl on my stomach between them with my Kindle, rubbing their soft heads and stroking their fur, listening for contented sighs and sometimes noisy breathing and invisible cat chasing. The cares of the day fade away in this zen environment.
I've been a both a professional writer and artist. Animals have often found their way into my work. I even worked for a year helping a silhouette artist friend with her pet ornament business.
It was during that period that I began to see just how important pets are to people. They are family. They burrow deep into our hearts and their time with us is all too brief. While they are with us we love showing them off and bragging about them just like we do if we have children. And when we lose them, it leaves a hole in our soul and we look for ways to remember them and celebrate our memories of them.
That brings me to my reason for writing. I finally decided it was time to round up my pet creations which I've developed over the years and sold in assorted physical and online locations and offer them in one place. That's how my new shop Serendipitypet.net came to be. In this online store I will be offering handmade and custom pet gifts. I am just at the beginning of this endeavor but am excited to share what I have made. More products are on the horizon.
In fact, if you have a special pet you'd like to share or a special pet story, feel free to reach out to me. I am actually looking to feature people and their pets on this blog. In the meantime, I hope you treasure every minute with your pet.
